Chapter 7 — Your hobbies, supercharged

Open the standing file

Pick your main hobby and start its conversation tonight — the one you'll keep. Open with the full briefing: where you are, what you've got, how long you've been at it, what's working, what's stumped you, and what you check in on seasonally versus weekly. Close with: "Remember all this — I'll be back in this same conversation regularly. To start: what's one thing someone in my exact situation should do in the next two weeks?"

Then — this is the actual win — go back to that same chat in two weeks. The first time it answers you in the context of everything you've already told it, you'll understand why Marlene refers to hers, without irony, as "the good neighbor." The garden club has not been told.

The hobbyist's four

1. The garden calendar

I'm in [city], zone [X]. Here's my yard: [beds, sun, what's planted]. Be my garden calendar: what should I do in the next two weeks, ranked by urgency, plain English? I'll check in twice a month in this conversation.

2. The research director (genealogy edition)

I'm researching [name], who I can place in [place] around [year] from records I've personally seen: [list them]. Don't guess at facts about this person — that's my job with real records. Your job: what record types from that time and place could move me forward, where do I find them, and what should I know about how they were kept?

3. The trip auditor

[Paste any itinerary]

Audit this for [who you are — ages, knees, pace]. What would you cut, what's secretly exhausting, where are the hidden stairs, and what's the version of this trip with one thing per day?

4. The patient teacher

Teach me [the skill you've been circling for years] from absolute zero. One lesson at a time, with practice between lessons, and don't move on until I say the last one went okay. Assume I'm smart and brand new.

That last prompt has a blank in it that this book cannot fill in for you. Everyone at the coffee table had one. Odds are excellent you didn't need me to tell you yours.

Works in ChatGPT, Claude, or any of their cousins.
