Chapter 6 — Redecorate before you commit
One room, two futures
Pick the room that bugs you most. Photograph it from the doorway, daylight, lights on. Attach it in ChatGPT with this: "Show me this exact room, same furniture and layout, in two versions: [a color you've been considering] and [a color that scares you a little]. Keep it realistic — this is a decision aid."
The safe one confirms. But it's the scary one that earns the minute — because it costs nothing, and "nothing" is a price at which even Frank will look at a bold color. Roughly half the time the scary one wins, which tells you something about how much of "safe" was really just "couldn't picture it."
The decorator's four
1. The room re-imaginer
[Attach room photo]
Show me this same room, same furniture and layout, repainted in [color]. The [trim/floor/fireplace] stays — work with it. Realistic, please; this is a decision aid, not a magazine cover.
2. The palette consultant (no photo, works anywhere)
My room has [fixed elements] and [direction]-facing light. I'm drawn to [family of colors] but unsure. Give me five wall colors that work with what's staying, with plain-English reasoning for each — undertones and light included. Then tell me which two you'd sample first and why.
3. The furniture shuffle
[Attach room photo]
Same room, same pieces — show me [the rearrangement]. Then list what you moved and flag anything that might not actually fit, so I know what to verify with a tape measure.
4. The curb appeal pass
[Attach photo of house from street]
Show me this house with [shutter color / door color / landscaping change]. Keep the house itself accurate. Treat the plants as suggestions — I'll take the planting plan up separately.
That separate planting plan is not a brush-off. It's the next chapter, where Marlene — whose garden room now needs a garden worthy of it — takes over entirely.
Works in ChatGPT, Claude, or any of their cousins.
