The envelope on the counter
You know the one. Tonight: open it, cover the account numbers with your thumb, photograph it, and run the translate move — "Explain what this is actually saying in plain English, what it wants from me if anything, and what deserves a closer look. Assume I've never seen a document like this."
Best case, it's nothing, and you've carried nothing around for a month. Worst case, it's something — in which case it was something while it sat there too, and now it's something with a plan attached. Either way the counter's clear, and per the Walt scale of household dread, that's most of the battle right there.
The filing cabinet four
1. The translator

Plain English: what is this actually saying, what does it want from me if anything, what's boilerplate versus what matters, and which date is the one that counts? Assume I've never seen one of these.
2. The bill auditor
Here are the line items from the bill; here are the line items from the insurance statement for the same visit. What doesn't match, what looks unusual, and give me the questions for the billing office — exactly worded, in order. Remember: you're flagging, not accusing.
3. The plan comparer
My actual year: medications [list], doctors [list], last year's medical events [rough picture]. Compare these plan summaries against MY situation, not in general. End with the questions I still need officially answered, and who answers them.
4. The letter
Draft a dispute/appeal letter. The facts, which are mine and final: [dates, amounts, promises, events, what I want]. Tone: firm, brief, professional — right and unhurried. One specific request, one reasonable deadline, no threats. I'll verify every fact before sending.
